Virginia is a very historical state. The state has been the birthplace of eight US presidents including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor, and Woodrow Wilson.
Virginia is divided into five regions including the Ridge and Valley, Shenandoah Valley, Blue Ridge Mountains, Piedmont and Tidewater. The Shenandoah Valley is often referred to as a region of its own. Virginia has many sources of state income. The southern part of Virginia includes military installations, cattle, tobacco and peanuts. The northern part of the state includes software, communications, consulting, defense contracting, diplomats, and other components of the government sector. Coal mining was very popular in southwest Virginia, and Gold mining was also one a significant part of the economy.
The state bird of Virginia is the Cardinal and the state dog is the American Foxhound. The state tree and state flower is the Dogwood. A unique symbol of the state is the state bat-the Virginia Big-Eared Bat. The state fish is the Brook Trout and the state shell is the oyster.
